To the Sud Tyrol - Merano, Italy - 26 Aprile

After all the flat, flat, flat land since the Appenines, we are headed for the foothills of the Dolomites. The geography along the river we are following, the Adige, is impressive. Vineyards and orchards in the valley with rock and treed walls on either side with to castles, still, sprinkled about. A strong tailwind makes for a steady pace even though we are head uphill.

Early morning Trento town square.

We ran into one of the partiers from the day before on her way to meet someone at the train station. She and I enjoyed a nice mix of French and German comminucation, actually.

Along the Adige... A river to accompany us for a long way.

Rain began spitting by the time we reached Merano, where German/Austrian was more prominent than Italian (since the land used to be Austrian). We pitched our tent at a campground adjacent to a horse track and enjoyed the sound of an early morning rider making the rounds...
